With “Inception,” there is a good 30 minutes or so of fairly drab exposition followed by 90 minutes of the most dense and thrilling cinema you’re likely to experience all year. Be prepared for gravity-defying action like you’ve never seen, a mind-bending narrative, and a mix of CGI and in-camera special effects that looks so real you’d swear the world was really folding in on itself. Nolan orchestrates the entire ambitious movie like it’s the secret back page of the coach’s playbook. It’s complicated and risky and everything has to go just as planned, but if it works—the payoff is everything. And whether you understand all of the plot’s complexities by the end of the film or not, you’ll probably be convinced of one thing—“Inception” pays off in spades.

Twilight: Eclipse Movie Review

Eric Melin welcomes guest host and
certified Twihard Kristin Dittmar, who is a member of Team Jacob to
review Twilight: Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight
series. The Mayan prophecy says the world will end in 2012, and Hollywood has co-opted that premise for a 2012 disaster flick with lots of state-of-the-art CGI special effects. Is 2012 up to the adventure movie standards of Emmerich, who also did Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow? Does it at least succeed as a 2012 doomsday action movie? Find out in this on-camera movie review of 2012 with clips from the film.

Where the Wild Things Are Movie Review

Eric's castmate on VH1's World Series of Pop Culture, Robert Bishop from Wocka Wocka, joins him for a review of Where the Wild Things Are. They aren’t afraid to tackle such heady topics as fetishized violence and superhuman strength from costumed adventurers who are supposed to be portrayed as having no superpowers (save Dr. Manhattan of course!), a gross simplification of the comic’s complicated themes, a shocking lack of subtlety, whether the heavily stylized look was the right choice for the material, whether one viewing is enough to balance the spectacle vs. the storytelling, and Eric’s failed strategy of trying really hard to resist reading the book again right before seeing the movie. This is an emotional, honest look at a film that both reviewers had been anticipating for years and years, and one still refuses to give up on, even when all his instincts tell him he should do just that.

2009 Oscar Picks Episode 4

The Oscar Fix, Episode 4 of 4: Back by popular demand! All the ads seem to suggest Tim Burton without actually saying his name, so that is addressed-- along with the spookiness of a kids' fantasy written by Neil Gaiman (of "Sandamn" comics fame) and the idea of 3D accentuating the movie without being too gimmicky. "Revolutionary Road" was directed by Winslet's husband Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") and adapted from the novel by Richard Yates. A depressing study of an unhappy married couple who feel trapped in the suburbs, it's about as far away from "Titanic" as you can get. Bush biopic "W." Many will come away from Oliver Stone's movie feeling sympathetic towards the George W. Bush, who never lived up to poppy Bush's expectations, and that is why the film is so devastating. Josh Brolin is excellent, and has the same natural charm that got Bush elected, and Stone's movie suggests what we've seen is what we get. That's all there is to this president. If "W." feels empty, that's because it reflects the soul of the man whom it is about.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://scene-stealers.blogspot.com/2008/10/w-movie-review.html' title='W. Being rockers ourselves, we wanted to do something a little different than the normal junket interview while Jason was in town promoting “The Rocker” (starring Rainn Wilson), so we ambushed the comedy star with a homegrown rock n’ roll quiz to see how much of his portrayal was a result of Method acting. As it turns out, this didn’t quite go exactly as planned. This is probably the last time we try to quiz a movie star. Yikes! Maybe we should just stick to the regular junket questions. Anyway, enjoy this very uncomfortable interview with Jason Sudeikis from a dirty hotel room somewhere in Kansas City.

Dark Knight Movie Review

Eric and J.D. tackle the epic proportions of Christopher Nolan’s second Batman movie “The Dark Knight” in this on-camera review, featuring clips from the much-anticipated movie. Indiana Jones is back and he's not after the raiders of the lost arc, he must instead deal with Russians, Rebels and Roswell. The "Last Crusade" was not the last Indiana Jones movie to kick some ass. Following the box office success of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian picks up the story with the four English children returning to Narnia, where they once ruled as kings and queens. Summer is here an the influx of superheroes is just beginning, but “Iron Man” is a cut above the rest. Thanks to a strong lead performane by Robert Downey, Jr., a script that’s actually about something, and director Jon Favreau’s keen eye for comedy, “Iron Man” gets two rock fists up even though it doesn’t use Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” until the closing credits.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Movie Review

Eric and J.D. from Scene-Stealers.com discuss why Jason Segel is the new Seth Rogen ("Superbad") and what makes "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" better than most romantic comedies of it ilk. Plus, UK comedian Russell Brand is hilarious.

Shine A Light Movie Review

The joke goes something like this: “Shine A Light,” the new Rolling Stones concert film, is the first Martin Scorsese movie to not feature “Gimme Shelter.” It’s true, Marty has used the Stones in “Mean Streets,” “GoodFellas,” and “The Departed,” but never before has he orchestrated a entire rapturous two-hour concert film about his favorite dangerous English rockers. Eric Melin, co-host of Scene-Stealers.com, caught up with the comedy genius while on the first stop of his Funny Or Die College Comedy Tour. He was also promoting his new movie about the American Basketball Association, "Semi-Pro." After taking a brief tour of Manhattan's highpoints (i.e., the bars), Eric journeyed to a sold-out Bramlage Coliseum where Will fucking Ferrell performed with Zach Galifianakas, Demetri Martin, and Nick Swardson. As Ron Burgandy, Ferrell also presented Kansas State University with an autographed Hammerhead shark. What more could you ask for? The Cloverfield monster revealed! In that respect, it won't disappoint. Check out this on-camera instant video movie review with clips from the movie to figure it out for yourself. But with all of the media surrounding this movie's release, is it even possible for any movie to ever live up to this kind of expectation? You might want to do yourself a favor before you go see Cloverfield and take a cue from "Public Enemy": "Don't Believe the Hype". Or at least try to not let the hype get to you.
